TOEFL Books & Resources

Recommended preparation materials for the TOEFL iBT. Official ETS materials are the primary source for authentic practice.

Official materials

ETS publishes the official TOEFL iBT tests and preparation guides. These materials mirror test-day format, question types, and difficulty. Use them for baseline and progress checks, and to calibrate your timing. Free and paid options are available; check the ETS website for current offerings. Official practice tests are the most reliable way to predict performance.

Supplementary resources

Third-party books and online resources can supplement official practice. Many target specific skills: academic vocabulary, integrated writing, speaking templates, or question-type drills. Use them for volume and variety, but cross-check format and difficulty against official materials. Older editions may not reflect recent format changes; prefer resources updated for the current test structure.

Format fit

ETS has updated the TOEFL format over time (e.g. section lengths, task types, delivery options). Ensure any material you use reflects the current structure: Reading 54–72 min, Listening 41–57 min, Speaking ~17 min, Writing 50 min; integrated and independent tasks as described on the official site. Outdated materials can mislead preparation.
