Quick facts
- Format: Internet-based test
- Section length: ~17 minutes
- Score range: 0–30 (section)
- Total score: 0–120 (four sections combined)
Structure
Speaking includes one independent and three integrated tasks. Integrated tasks require reading and/or listening before responding. Responses are recorded and scored later.
Task 1 (Independent)
Express your opinion on a familiar topic. 15 seconds preparation, 45 seconds response. No reading or listening.
Tasks 2–4 (Integrated)
Read and/or listen, then respond. Task 2: campus situation (read + listen). Task 3: academic (read + listen). Task 4: academic lecture only. Prep 30 sec, response up to 60 sec per task.
Scoring
Speaking is scored by human raters and, where used, automated systems. Each task receives a raw score on a 0–4 scale. Raw scores are combined and converted to the 0–30 section score. The rubrics emphasise delivery (fluency, pronunciation), language use (grammar, vocabulary), and topic development (coherence, completeness). Responses are recorded; raters do not see the candidate. See the Scoring page for section-level details.
Common candidate weakness patterns
Typical patterns observed in Speaking:
- Insufficient development; answers too short or cut off before the time limit
- Integrated tasks: failing to synthesise reading and listening; omitting key points from the lecture
- Listening note issues: weak or illegible notes leading to incomplete or inaccurate responses
- Unclear organisation; missing or weak transitions between ideas
- Template overuse: rigid opening phrases that sound scripted or do not fit the prompt
- Pronunciation or fluency issues that impede comprehension; long hesitations or fillers
- Time mismanagement: running out of prep time or failing to use the full response window
